Ashton Smith represents everything that is good in Bentonville Schools. He loves his family, his students at Evening Star Elementary, his work but, most importantly, he loves this life we've been given.
Ashton is a first year certified commissioned security officer at Evening Star and a United States Army Veteran. His job according to the description is to protect the students and staff of his school, but its interactions with his students that have set him apart.
Amy Parton, an Evening Star mother, wrote that her son, Miles, was still finding his footing when Officer Smith extended his friendship.
“CSSO Smith built a relationship with my son using Miles’ imagination, sense of purpose and fun,” Amy wrote.
During the holidays last year, CSSO Smith and Miles set up cozy traps that smelled like peppermint complete with a welcoming sign to capture Christmas elves at Evening Star. The two investigated an elf who sent coded messages to school. Together they created an evidence locker where they tracked the communications and worked to crack the codes.
Amy said the two bonded over their holiday mission, jokes and recess.
“Miles KNOWS CSSO Smith cares for him. He KNOWS CSSO Smith is in his court. And he KNOWS CSSO Smith is someone he can depend on,” Amy told us.
Officer Smith said eventually more students joined their mission, and while the elves proved to be elusive, they did capture a few winter gnomes.
“Miles’ vivid imagination on the playground and outgoing personality in the halls is a daily, humbling reminder that we adults could benefit from the childlike wonder we once had,” Officer Smith said.

What a beautiful classroom! Central Park Elementary School teacher Josh Hicklin recently organized a fishing derby for his students and the community said, "I'm in!"
Cornerstone Ridge POA invited students to fish on their property while the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Nelson's Hardware provided the rods, reels and baits. Finally, the Central Park PTO provided the money to launch a school fishing program on their campus.

This might be the sweetest thing we've seen on our bingo card all year. Students from Ardis Ann Middle School held a donation drive and assembled care baskets for the residents at The Gardens at Osage Terrace. Their blessing baskets held socks, lotion and snacks.

The cast of Frozen from Bentonville West High School shared warm hugs with Centerton Gamble Elementary School students as they finished a school day this week. The actors helped students in the bus and car rider lines. The little audience loved seeing Elsa, Anna and Kristoff before they headed home.

Congratulations to Washington Junior High School student-athlete Isla Findlay! She outran 426 female competitors of all ages to win the Run Bentonville 5k this past weekend. Isla completed the 3.1 mile course in 18:27.
Her parents, Craig and Marie Findlay, were both semi-professional athletes in their home country of Scotland, with her dad playing soccer and her mom an elite swimmer. Their love for competitive sport was passed down to Isla who completed her first triathlon at just four years old.
Isla will attend high school at Bentonville High School and hopes to run cross country and track & field for the Tigers. She's currently a member of the Rush Running Co. team. Way to get it, Isla! #whereexcellencelives

Congratulations to our March Extra Mile Award recipient, Casey Henry. Coach Henry is the assistant coach for ladies basketball at Bentonville West High. In the fall of 2025, he helped to save the life of a basketball official who collapsed during a game. Coach is a former Army Medic and served in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. We're proud of Coach Henry and express our deepest gratitude for his service to our nation.
