Just before the winter break, Bentonville High School Senior Rachel Saulsbery served as a keynote speaker at the Arkansas School Boards Association seminar after writing the winning presentation to gain the opportunity. Rachel spoke on the timely topic of the ethical use of AI in education, privacy and security scenarios and the social impact of artificial intelligence, the good and the bad. We're proud of Rachel and the work she's doing! Keep it going, Rachel! #whereexcellencelives

Elementary schools in our district all have what’s called activity teams. At Vaughn Elementary School, the team consists of teachers Shanna Amos, Carol Halbmaier, Jane Hundley, Leslie Mackey, Jennifer Rivera, Beau Smith and Kenneth Timbrel. They were nominated for the Extra Mile Award by their principal, Kendra Schacht. In her nomination, she wrote this team is the first to volunteer for any event, celebration or task. The team recently hosted a party for a classroom without a parent volunteer. They schedule time to mentor students, and if they aren’t assigned a duty in the mornings, they welcome students as they enter the building. In all they do, they seek out ways to contribute. Please join us in congratulating Kenny, Carol, Leslie, Beau, Shanna, Jane and Jenni! #whereexcellencelives

Christmas came early for the Bentonville Pride! Recently, the Sudler Shield Award Committee convened and unanimously voted to honor the Bentonville Pride Marching Band as the 2023 Sudler Shield Award Winner. This achievement marks the first time an Arkansas band has received this prestigious accolade. In its 37-year history, the Sudler Shield has been awarded to only 112 bands globally, representing 19 states and seven countries. Congratulations, BHS Pride! #whereexcellencelives

Evening Star Elementary and Willowbrook Elementary are Model PLC schools! This is a big honor presented by a renowned organization called Solution Tree. That company promotes professional learning communities in schools across the nation. In other words, bring together the very best to work for solutions that benefit our students. Principal Ashley Williams and Principal Christina Hamilton lead a solid group of educators most deserving of this honor! #whereexcellencelives

Thomas Jefferson Elementary recently hosted the best after-party! The PTO there hosted Cookies with Santa one night, inviting students to make reindeer food and buy a jingle bell necklace. (It's the accessory of the season we hear!) Teachers used the proceeds from that jewelry sale to support a TJ family in need of a hand-up this holiday season! Well done, TJ! #whereexcellencelives

2023 State Performance Awards
This is the start of something big in Bentonville! We celebrated the launch of two parent choice schools this morning. In the fall of 2024, Apple Glen Elementary and The International School at Mary Mae Jones will open their doors to students outside their zones. Apple Glen is the state's only visible learning school and The International School will offer an international baccalaureate program to elementary students. Congratulations to our November Extra Mile Award recipients! Zack Jostad, Beth Spicer and Pete Madsen recently hosted a writer's conference at Bentonville West High School for more than 200 high school students. Thanks to a grant from the Bentonville Schools Foundation, the trio set about securing several panelists and published authors, including one on the New York Times bestseller list. Students were encouraged to ask questions, think big, and, of course, write. The event was a huge success! #whereexcellencelives

When Scarlett Lewis created the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement, she said four things were necessary for a successful formula: compassion, courage, forgiveness and gratitude. On this day of Thanksgiving, we're feeling so much gratitude! Gratitude for our students, their families and this beautiful community we call home! What a gift! Tracee Vickery, a teacher at Thomas Jefferson Elementary, was shopping some ideas for a school courtyard at the N. Bentonville Lowe's Home Improvement when some associates there began to ask a few questions! With $500 in seed money from the TJ PTO and generous donations from the Lowes team, students will enjoy a garden this spring! The Lowes management team along with an awesome workforce from the PTO landscaped, created raised beds and built a picnic area. The area will be used as a calming space and for outdoor classroom learning! What an awesome community this is! #whereexcellencelives

Signed, sealed and delivered! Recently, about 50 of our student-athletes committed to continue their sport at the collegiate level. We're proud of these high school students, and we have to hand it to their parents, too! Thank you to all the moms, dads, grandparents, and the whole village who shuttled them to every practice and then proudly sat in the stands on game days. Way to go, athletes! #whereexcellencelives
